Evaluation - How successful is the combination of your ancillary tasks with the short film?

The above products are my final ancillary tasks. I believe that they work well together with the film, particularly the radio trailer as it contains audio from the film. In order to make our film sound as though it is of the mystery genre, we added mysterious and a little odd music behind the radio trailer, and the audio we selected from the short film were the lines "she's dead" and "you need to give her it back". I also believe that our tagline in the trailer, that being ' Have you returned what isn't yours', works extremely well with the narrative of the short film, even if it may be a little unclear at the beginning. Additionally, I tried to present the idea of mystery with my film poster by using an still from the end scene of the bracelet on the grave stone and a close up of the stalkers eyes faded through the gravestone. I though that this worked well, as it is part of the twist in the narrative. I had also incorporated colours that I thought would be linked with the mystery genre, and the white text over the dark background and image stands out very well overall.

Below are the drafts for my film poster. I had first taken a series of shots at different angles of the gravestone in order to see what image would work the best as a poster. After deciding which images to keep, I then edited them using Photoshop, which was mainly selecting a filter causing the image to not be as light as it was, cutting out the scenery behind the gravestone and using the blur tool to blur the name on the gravestone.

Overall I think that the combination of my ancillaries with my short film work very well together as a way of promoting the film, as the  poster and radio trailer certainly are suitable for the intended target audience. The ancillaries also promote the genre of the film effectively.

Evaluation - What did you learn from your audience feedback?

From our audience feedback, along with what is said in the video, that the film was good overall, however we could have done more to enable a build of suspension, add a little more dialogue and possibly go into more detail about the stalker. In order to do this we could prolong the extent of the stalking by not showing it in a montage, instead show it as a normal part of the film, with doing this, we could also add more dialogue. We could have also shot some scenes in the dark, or with low key lighting. Additionally, we could have added an extra scene possibly showing more information about that stalker such as where she came from, and how she died etc. Also we could have showed the main character becoming more vulnerable as a result of the stalking, as this would have built tension for the audience.

Ancillary Task - Short Film Radio Trailer

Script

This is the script that we have devised for the discovery of who the stalker is.

----Finds article, rings Shannon----

Charlotte: I’ve found something, you need to come. I think it’s her.

_ Shannon knocks on door----

Shannon: What is it what have you found?

Charlotte: Look, Isn’t this the girl who is stalking you?

Shannon: Yeah…….
She’s dead?

Charlotte: It say’s she’s called Poppy Noble

Shannon: So we’re related?

Charlotte: We must be and look, it’s your bracelet. Maybe that’s why she’s following you. She wants it back!

Shannon:, you can’t honestly believe that.

Charlotte: Well why else would she be stalking you?
We need to give her it back.
The article says she’s buried in Skelton cemetery.

At cemetery

Shannon: How’s this going to work?  How can I give it back?

Charlotte: Just leave it by her grave.
---Places on grave---

Story board

This is a story board as part of our research and planning for the first half of our short film. It shows the opening scene where the stalker is staring at the main character, the second scene where the stalker follows the main character into a shop. The third image is of the third scene where the main characters shopping bags slip, and the stalker comes to her aid. The fourth and fifth images are of the scene where the main character and her cousin are waiting to catch  a bus, however, they end up losing their money and the stalker comes to aid the characters by giving them the money that they lost.

Planning for short film

The following images are of our planning for the different shot types we aim to use scene by scene in our short film.

Opening Scene Practice

Our task was to shoot a scene from our short film as a practise task, as due to research and planning in class, we had completed the types of shots, location and editing needed for each scene. Throughout completing this practise task, we had come across a few difficulties, such as the weather being a large factor in the filming process, as the scene is supposed to be longer, as the main character is tracked and 'stalked' further down the street. However due to it being slippery on the street, we were unable to continue with shooting the scene. We also discovered that some of the shots we had planned for may not work well, such as the tracking of the main character. This is because the tracking goes on for too long, and so as result will bore the viewer.
